Character Education

What is Character Education?

Character education is planting and nurturing our roots in positive traits at home, school and in our community.

Objectives

1.     To reinforce positive character values in the hearts, hands and minds of our students.

2.     To provide opportunities for students and adults to practice positive character traits in the home, school and the community.

Scope of the Program

Character education has become a significant part of how we operate at St. John the Evangelist school and is incorporated into every subject from preschool to eighth grade. Our staff will model positive character traits as they work with the students. Teachers will receive training in ways to reinforce character, and all staff will recognize the importance of positive character development.

Curriculum Addition

As part of our regular St. John the Evangelist curriculum, we are continuing "character development”. Each nine weeks the students, teachers and administrators will be developing a particular value. The teachers will be incorporating the value into every aspect of the curriculum. The value of respect is the umbrella that all the other values will revolve around. Other values to be emphasized are as follows:

           Responsibility – 1st nine weeks

Compassion and caring – 2nd nine week

           Honesty – 3rd nine weeks

Justice and fairness – 4th nine weeks

We are asking that the parents help us to reinforce these values at home. More information will be in the school newsletters.

What Role Do Parents Play?

We believe that the primary responsibility for teaching values and developing children's character rests in the home. However, schools can reinforce students' positive character by supporting guiding principles we all consider essential to becoming responsible adults.

The St. John the Evangelist traits to be reinforced and practiced:

·               Regard yourself and others with respect.

·               Everyone has the right to respect .

·               Say "please" and "thank you."

·               Polite answers show respect.

·               Each day grow in respectfulness.

·               Courtesy is treating others as we wish to be treated.

·               Truth deserves respect.
